The Danube is without doubt one of the great rivers of Europe.  It’s the second longest river after the Volga.  It originates in Germany and flows southeast for 1,770 miles, passing through or bordering Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine, before emptying into the Black Sea.   As you cruise along the river, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating history and culture of the most wonderful and colourful cities located at the heart of Europe.  With time in Vienna as well as a visit to Budapest, this is a wonderful opportunity to sail the waters immortalised by the composer Johann Strauss in The Blue Danube.

Captain Pat McKenna and First Officer Hughie Turner welcome you on board and invite you to join them and a host of other members of the entertainment crew before commencing our cruise at the pretty and very interesting city of Passau on the Austrian border.  There will be plenty of comfort stops en route at a host of fascinating locations including  Dürnstein, famous for the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart, and the romantic town of Melk, situated in the Wachau Valley, where you can join an optional excursion to visit the most famous monastic house in Austria, the Benedictine Abbey.  Have a look now at the itinerary which will give you a better picture of what is in store for you.  .

ITINERARY  2nd – 9th July 2020

Day 1: Passau

Transfer by luxury coach from airport and board the ship in Passau, known as the ‘three rivers city’ due to its unique location where the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz rivers meet.  You can then relax onboard as we set sail and cruise towards Melk.

Day 2: Melk – Vienna

You can join an optional excursion to visit the most famous monastic house in Austria, the Benedictine Abbey, situated above Melk in the Wachau valley. The remainder of the day can be spent relaxing on board to some entertainment as we sail to Vienna for an overnight stop.

Day 3: Vienna

We spend a whole day in Vienna seeing the key attractions of this city. After breakfast, you can join our optional city tour, and in the afternoon, we have another optional excursion to Schönbrunn Palace.  In the evening we cast off and cruise towards Budapest.

Day 4: Budapest

Spend time in one of the world’s most beautiful cities and explore both sides of Hungary’s capital – traditional ‘Buda’ and cosmopolitan ‘Pest’. Start with an optional tour to become acquainted with the city and in the evening, you can choose to experience Budapest by night on another optional excursion.

Day 5: Budapest-Bratislava

Enjoy free time in Budapest or opt to take our excursion taking you through the sweeping plains of Hungary to Lajosmizse. Here we visit a traditional stud farm and enjoy a tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching a live Puszta horse show.  This is a highly recommended visit.  Many of our Enjoy Travel guests have participated before and all have expressed great delight at the experience.

Before returning to the ship try and visit the monument of the shoes on the banks of the Danube.  It’s a memorial to honour the Jewish people who were killed by being shot into the river during WW2. They were ordered to take off their shoes and were then shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away.  It represents their shoes left behind on the bank.  Very moving.

Later we then sail to Bratislava.

Day 6: Bratislava-Durstein

Join our optional walking tour to take in the sights of the Slovakian capital, dominated by its castle, and experience its rich culture.   With a population of about 430,000, it is one of the smaller capitals of Europe but still the country’s largest city.   It is located in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the Danube.  Bordering Austria and Hungary it is the only national capital that borders two sovereign states.

The city’s history has been influenced by people of many nations and religions, including Austrians, Bulgarians, Croats, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Serbs and Slovaks.

It has several universities, and many museums, theatres, galleries and other cultural and educational institutions.  In 2017, Bratislava was ranked as the third richest region of the EU by GDP, after Hamburg and Luxembourg.  Bratislava also plays host to around 1 million tourists every year.

Later in the day we set sail towards Dürnstein.

Day 7: Dürnstein-Passau

The town of Dürnstein nestles among Austria’s most famous vineyards and is crowned by the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart. It’s a beautiful place filled with cobbled streets, pretty courtyards and 16th-century houses. After some free time we set sail for the final time and cruise back towards Passau.

Day 8: Passau
After breakfast we disembark this morning and travel by coach to the airport for your return flight home.  Departure times etc., will be available nearer to the date and we will liaise directly with you regarding these.
