The Danube is without doubt one of the great rivers of Europe. It’s the second longest river after the Volga. It originates in Germany and flows southeast for 1,770 miles, passing through or bordering Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine, before emptying into the Black Sea. As you cruise along the river, you can immerse yourself in the fascinating history and culture of the most wonderful and colourful cities located at the heart of Europe. With time in Vienna as well as a visit to Budapest, this is a wonderful opportunity to sail the waters immortalised by the composer Johann Strauss in The Blue Danube.
Captain Pat McKenna and First Officer Hughie Turner welcome you on board and invite you to join them and a host of other members of the entertainment crew before commencing our cruise at the pretty and very interesting city of Passau on the Austrian border. There will be plenty of comfort stops en route at a host of fascinating locations including Dürnstein, famous for the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart, and the romantic town of Melk, situated in the Wachau Valley, where you can join an optional excursion to visit the most famous monastic house in Austria, the Benedictine Abbey.
