The spectacular 4* Hotel Amaragua, Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol will host the 2021 WINTER FOLK AND CONTRA DANCING Holiday from the 21st January – 4th February 2021.
From the moment you arrive you will become immersed in a truly joyful and happy atmosphere, with lots of music, lots of dance and bags of opportunities to mingle and mix with really nice people. You will, without doubt, be made to feel welcome from the outset and even if you can’t dance, there will be bags of opportunities to learn at the workshops! These are conducted under the stewardship of Ivan Aitken, Frances Oates and Maggie Hosking all of whom make the learning process so much fun! The music of course is presented by a group of thoroughly professional musicians and it is a absolute joy to just sit and listen to them even if you never put a foot on the dance floor! Their reels, jigs and hornpipes etc. are delivered in a foot tapping, handclapping style that is difficult to resist!
We are delighted to include one week of Contra Dancing (commencing the 28th) alongside the English Folk Dancing into this Winter Folk And Contra Dancing festival on the Costa del Sol. This form of dancing can be found all round the world but mostly in the United States and in the UK. It will sit very comfortably with our Winter Folk and Contra Dancing friends. Although it has a rather mixed pedigree, coming from English, Scottish, Irish, and French dance styles it has one great advantage – You can attend without a partner! As the lines of dancers are formed and throughout the dance you can progress up and down the lines and dance with several other people and what’s more you will have excellent callers including Cis Hinkle, on hand to make sure that you don’t make any mistakes like dancing with two people at the same time! Sounds fun though! Eh!
Join Musicians; Bill Keys, Meg Winters, Frances Oates, David Bradley, Mike Green, Rosie & Brian McMinn, The English Contra Band, David Bradley, Frances Oates, Brooke Friendly and callers; Frances Oates, Geoff Cubitt, Maggie Hosking & Ivan Aitken for a fortnight of live music and English country dancing from 1651 to the present day, along with daily workshops and activities in this amazing location.

IVAN AITKEN – FESTIVAL DIRECTOR
From Reading in Berkshire, Ivan is our Festival Director and an expert caller with many years of experience. He is in demand all year round by many local clubs, dance weekends, and folk festivals including Broadstairs, \Bromyard, Chippenham, Eastbourne, Sidmouth, Southam and Whitby. He is noted for his wide and interesting repertoire of dances which includes Contras, Squares, Playford, Scottish and modern English Dances. He is noted for always delivering with care, humour and attention to detail.
LINDA GAME & GARETH KIDDIER – ENGLISH CONTRA BAND
This is a two-piece band playing a wide and varied programme for Contra Dancing. Linda is an absolutely superb musician and plays a driving fiddle style accompanied by a solid piano rhythm expertly provided by Gareth. Although they are from different music traditions, English Traditional and Rock, they compliment each other beautifully and have adapted extremely well to the American high energy style of Contra dance music. As a dancer once said “How can two people make such a wonderful beautiful noise?” Don’t miss them this year!
Last year was the first time that Enjoy Travel had the pleasure of working with Chris, but it certainly won’t be the last!
All the way from the USA, Cis has been delighting Contra and Square dancers since 1985 with her skilled teaching, her welcoming manner and her playful enthusiasm and her masterful selection of dances! She is in great demand at music and dance festivals all over the US, England and Denmark and we are delighted that she has agreed to be with us again in Spain in 2021.
Bill started dancing aged 4 and hasn’t stopped since. The airline had difficulty getting him to stop dancing up and down the aisle while they took off and landed! He plays the penny whistle, and the bones (AT THE SAME TIME?) No! But I’ll bet he would have a go if someone would hold the whistle for him! Bill is a very likeable individual with a good sense of humour and loves playing for English Country Dance and Contra. He has almost twenty years of experience playing at UK folk festivals and dance clubs including Sidmouth, Broadstairs and Whitby.
Meg is a mighty rhythm player and has played with several folk dance bands since the 1970’s including many great musicians like the Alterationsd who together presented new ways of making and understanding music and art. Meg now plays with Momentum, Meg ‘n’ Mor and other combinations known as Moonlighting! Meg devotes a lot of her time to classes on the events so be sure to pop in to one of her sessions! You will not be disappointed!
Mike plays mandolin and octave mandolin with numerous midlands folk dance bands and is a long time musician for the Wayfarers country dance display team, which is affiliated to the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) and was officially formed in 1966 by a group of enthusiastic dancers and musicians with the aim of displaying British traditional dances to a wider audience and developing and maintaining international relations by forming links with similar groups overseas. Mike has played at dances and festivals in the UK and abroad and enjoys every style of dance music from Playford to American Contra.
Maggie is a member of the EFDSS (English Folk Dance and Song Society) and she discovered folk dancing in 1990 after moving to Warwickshire. As a dance teacher for the Wayfarers, she enjoys display dancing and regularly performs at home and abroad.
Brian discovered toe joys of folk dancing in his late twenties. Then after jamming on the piano in a folk music session, he was introduced to the piano accordion. Since then he has played as a regular musician at several midland dance clubs. As the leader of Jovial Crew he has played at several national festivals, dance weekends and holidays and regularly for dances. He has played at Sidmouth Folk Festival and at Halsway Manor.
Rosie started folk dancing about thirty years ago. She replaced her clarinet for a Yamaha wind synthesizer so that she could start playing in the family band PATCHWORK. She has played with Brian for over ten years. She now provides flute, recorder, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, etc. She can add bass or melody lines to the band sound and has no problem with extra baggage with Ryanair! She is a joy to listen to as well as to dance to so if you want to hear her or indeed dance to her, get booking this trip now!
